Was Tom Brady On Something When He Laughed Off Tampering Allegations?

The answer is yes– He was riding the victory wave of the New England Patriot’s crushing AFC victory over the Indianapolis Colts.

AFC Championship 2015 Allegation Against New England Patriots

After the rain soaked game that took place Sunday night at Gilette Stadium, allegations have been made that the New England Patriots had tampered with the footballs which led to their 45-7 victory over the Colts. The NFL is now investigating whether or not the New England Patriots intentionally deflated footballs during the game.

NFL Specifications For Footballs

In football, size does matter. According to the NFL rulebook, footballs must be inflated between 12.5 and 13.5 pounds per square inch and weigh between 14 and 15 ounces. This maintains consistency and accuracy of games. A deflated football would actually make it much easier to grip and therefore provide an unfair advantage.

Tom Brady On The Defense

While this seems like no laughing matter, Tom Brady quipped at the allegations and brushed them off during an interview with Weei stating, “I have no idea” what the controversy was about. ‘I think I’ve heard it all at this point,’ he said with a laugh. Added Brady: ‘That’s the last of my worries. I don’t even respond to stuff like this.’” Interestingly, we cannot blame him since a deflated football would have provided an “unfair” advantage to both teams. And while #deflategate might be a trending topic right now, we are more interested in the science of football and where it is headed.

For Football-A Little More Science A Lot Less Fiction

Perhaps if they had implemented technologies such as the wireless motion sensor technology into game footballs, they could actually extract data from the players’ performances throughout the game and the actual ball itself to possibly eliminate the time spent on creating buzzworthy allegations.
