In General Relativity gravity is viewed as a curvature of Spacetime so Gravitational Waves are ripples in the fabric of space and time itself. A gravitational wave alternately stretches and shrinks space as it passes through, but on a very small scale. Predicted sources of strong gravitational waves in the Galaxy are supernova explosions, collapsing stellar cores as they form neutron stars or black holes. (Source: The Cassiopeia Project)
