Scientists at the University of California, San Diego have discovered an alternative source of stem cells – hair follicles. Their research, the results of which have recently been featured in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, could put an end to the ethical controversy surrounding stem cell research by eliminating the need to use embryonic stem cells. In their study, researchers show that mature nerve cells can be grown from hair follicle stem cells, which they say could also be used to treat neurological conditions. The follicle cells were also shown to develop into skin cells, smooth muscle cells and pigment-producing cells.
