Engineers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have developed a robotic personal assistant, which they say, was specially designed to aid the elderly. Their “uBot” is a toddler-sized robot which is equipped with an LCD monitor and a web-cam – the robot is currently able to move around the house and help in tasks such as lifting heavy weights and fetching a bottle of water. However, the inventors say their focus is on giving uBot more operational freedom, which they say could save human life in the future. For example, if a person falls over but remains responsive, he can command the robot to call a family member or a doctor. But if he fails to respond, the robot will take a series of preliminary steps, such as measure the person’s heart rate and blood pressure, call for an ambulance, and even transmit the data to the medical team before it arrives. |
