The orchard spider, officially known as “Leucauge venusta” is a long-jawed spider, characterized by its unique horizontally-oriented web, at the center of which the weaver himself hangs facing down. The species, which are common in areas from southern Canada to Panama, can also be recognized by neon yellow, orange, or red spots on the rear of the abdomen. This video reveals the orchard spider’s deadly enemy – the wasp. Attaching itself externally to the spider at the junction of its cephalothorax and abdomen, the wasp larva resides on it for weeks, eventually killing the spider and weaving a cocoon of its own, in which it grows to maturity. |
