Researchers at Toronto University have found a direct link between sweet tooth and the presence of a genetic variant of GLUT 2 (glucose transporter type 2) gene – namely, the scientists discovered that individuals who regularly consume more sugar in their daily diet have tested positive for a variant of GLUT 2 gene, which controls sugar entry into body cells. "Obviously, it doesn't explain fully why some people crave sugar and others don't, but it provides a previously unknown mechanism to explain that" – said Ahmed El-Sohemy, senior investigator of the university’s department of nutritional sciences. |
