The Manchester-based firm “Image Metrics” provides computer animation services for the film and video games industries. Image Metrics’ proprietary technology provides a faster and cheaper way of creating realistic animated faces using a method called “performance-driven animation.” With this technique, an actor’s video is processed to create a computer-generated character, which can be a look-alike of the actor himself or some entirely different fantastic creature. As oppose to previous technologies that were based on capturing the actors’ movements and expressions, Image Metrics doesn’t require special camera set-ups and allows the actors to be filmed without markers or special make-up, which not only eases the process but also generates a more accurate final result.
