A team of computer scientists from Brown University have created a robot that can be guided by human gestures to perform tasks in a variety of environments – both indoors and outdoors. Their “iRobot,” which has been demonstrated at the recent Human-Robot Interaction conference, is capable of following a human partner at a precise distance, halting when signaled with a certain gesture or verbal command. iRobot’s instructor isn’t required to wear any special clothing in order to interact with the machine, and doesn’t need to look backward to track it. In this video, iRobot is shown to recognize hand-arm signals and act accordingly – following his instructor’s steps, halting when needed, and even “breaching doors.”
