A British company developed a smart material which turns rigid after being hit. The matter, which was dubbed “d3o,” was specially engineered with ”intelligent molecules” that flow under normal conditions, but lock together on shock, absorbing the impact energy. The do3 sheet material is currently available in two geometries – the 4-6 mm “mesh” and the 10 mm “contour.” Products based on the d3o technology are already in production, as the company focuses on designing flexible protectors for the human body – specifically, for the head, hands, and feet.
