Living far down in the depths of the oceans, these amazing luminescent creatures aren’t easy to come by. Bioluminescence, the production and emission of light by a living organism, is the result of a chemical reaction in which chemical energy is being converted to light energy. Occurring not only in marine vertebrates, the phenomenon can be observed in microorganisms and terrestrial animals as well. It is mostly common, however, in marine creatures. In fact, as many as 90 percent of deep-sea marine life is estimated to produce bioluminescence in one form or another.
