French researchers have invented a material that is able to repair itself after being sliced in two. The yet-unnamed substance is a form of artificial rubber, which was created using vegetable oil and a component of urine. Scientists have demonstrated the new substance by showing how separate pieces of the material can be rejoined simply by rubbing them one against the other. The reason for such perfect reunion, they said, lies in a remarkable property of this material, which when cut produces surfaces that retain a strong chemical attraction to each other. While the scientists say the new substance could be used for a variety of engineering purposes such as self-healing seals, they also have some playful suggestions for its use – “Why not use it to make children's toys? Children are always breaking their toys. Wouldn't it be nice if you could put them back together so easily?”
