Scientists at the Graphics Lab at the University of Southern California have designed a 3D display system which they say offers unique advantages for displaying 3D objects in actual 3D. The system, which requires no special viewing glasses, can generate simultaneous views of the 3D image, accommodating a large number of viewers and updating content at 200Hz. The device's underlying technology is based on projecting high-speed video onto a rapidly spinning mirror, which reflects a different and accurate image to each potential viewer. According to the inventors, their rendering algorithm can recreate both virtual and real scenes with correct occlusion, horizontal and vertical perspective, and shading. |
