Robert Lang, a laser physicist and origami artist, combined his profession and hobby to create the field of “computational origami. Applying the same mathematical modeling methods he uses in laser physics to paper folding, Lang succeeded in computationally producing the exact folds needed to build multi-legged insects, along with their antennae. According to Lang, his work isn’t limited to art and he says that the equations developed to make origami can also be applied to engineering problems in which large surfaces need to be folded to fit into a flat space without being cut. |
