Why is it that most babies are born with blue eyes, regardless of the eye color of their parents? The answer to this lies in a protein called melanin - the pigment molecule that colors our skin, hair, and eyes. When a baby is born, melanin isn’t fully deposited in the irises of the eyes yet and this is what usually leads to a blue or light gray eye color. Melanin production generally increases during the first year of a baby’s life, darkening the eye color within a few months time. |
