The British motor car manufacturer Morgan first announced its plans for developing a hydrogen-powered LifeCar about 18 months ago, and is now promising to present a fully functional unit at the Geneva Motor Show. The new prototype is a fuel cell hybrid sports car based on the Aero Eight roadster. Several organizations, including Oxford University, collaborated on this project, and over $3 million have been invested in it. The design features a regenerative-electric motor in each wheel. It is powered by a fuel cell and it is claimed to have a driving range of 200 miles (320 kilometers). The LifeCar has built in ultra-capacitors that are charged using regenerative braking and surplus energy, allowing for a smaller hydrogen tank. Currently, Morgan Motor has not mentioned whether the LifeCar is actually destined for production or not. However, its makers are hoping that the LifeCar's combination of performance, range, and fuel economy will persuade even the most skeptical drivers of the benefits of "green" transportation. TFOT recently covered the Air Car CityCat, a 'green' car with efficiency of 106 miles to the gallon, and the Thermal Glider, an autonomous underwater vehicle powered by 'green' energy. Another ecological vehicle recently covered by TFOT is the Jeep Renegade, designed by Chrsyler to be the ultimate 'green' outdoor vehicle. More information on the LifeCar can be found on Morgan Motor's website. |

The prototype car was a stunner at the show, and has been seen on the road. I believe the biggest issues are hydrogen infrastructure and price. I have heard rumors that the company is eager to announce a limited production run during its 100th anniversary celebration this summer. |

Unfortunately we won\'t be able to buy one of these this year. With the economy so desperate the company appears to be focusing on its core products. On the bright side, the technology for fuels cells and ultra-capacitors has been advancing, so that when the production decision is made the car will be faster with a longer range. |

The Morgan Lifecar is the 1886 Benz of 2010. The auto of the not too distant future will have a high efficiency fuel cell plus ultra capacitors. Who would be the Henry Ford of the electric car? |
