Toshiba recently unveiled its new G450 at the 2008 CES, which took place in Las Vegas. The G450 is a multifunctional device, serving as a mobile phone, a USB modem, a USB data storage device, and an MP3 player. It is designed to provide an easy way to link a laptop to the Internet over a HSDPA (3.5G) mobile network, while simultaneously making and receiving calls. Weighing only 57 grams, the G450 does not add unnecessary weight when carrying a laptop and provides a simple 'plug and play' mobile network connection while still functioning as a mobile phone.

The unique four-in-one G450 does not require any special settings in order to provide broadband PC access to the Web over either 3G/HSDPA mobile networks, EDGE or GPRS connections. All one needs to do is simply plug it into any USB socket. The G450 charges itself directly from the laptop's USB socket.

Thanks to the Toshiba's G450 160 MB storage space, it can easily function as a USB memory storage device. In addition, it has basic mobile phone key functions such as voice calling, text messaging, and an alarm clock. However, unlike most advanced mobile phones on the market, the G540 is not equipped with a camera.

The design of the lozenge-shaped device is very compact (just 98mm long),  and it is comprised of three interlinked spheres. When using the G450 built-in MP3 music player, the music automatically pauses to allow the user to receive a call,  automatically resuming when the call is over.

“With increasingly mobile lives and flexible working practices, there’s a real and growing need for new solutions to connect people and enable them to work more effectively when they are away from the office", commented Takashi Okamoto, Deputy Managing Director of Toshiba Information Systems (UK) Ltd.

TFOT recently covered other innovative mobile phones such as the Neonode N2 – a user friendly phone/media player with a specially designed optical touch screen and user interface, the Nokia Eco Sensor Concept - a 'green' mobile phone designed to enhance our awareness both of the environment and of ourselves, and the ASUS P526 - a slim and light pocket PC phone (PPC) showcased at Cebit 2007.

More information on the G450 can be found on Toshiba's website.
