Stryder is a hybrid crutch and knee scooter for non-weight bearing lower leg injuries. It enables users to get around with greater efficiency of movement and less strain and fatigue on the body than using conventional crutches. It works as a knee scooter for commuting in an urban environment and can fold into a crutch to navigate stairs and to assist in getting on and off public transport. Stryder can be adjusted to fit different heights, accommodating people from the 5th percentile to the 95th percentile of 16 to 45 year old users. Extruded aluminium and resin injected high impact acrylic form the basis of the Stryder frame. Polyurethane coated handles and knee pad provide comfortable hand grips and support on weight bearing surfaces. Stryder’s aesthetics addresses a mutual gender demographic of patients who are daily commuters and aims to promote mobility, comfort and independence. |

People who suffer from non-weight bearing lower leg injuries have a limited choice in the mobility aids available on the market in which to help them get back to their daily activities. Crutches are versatile in tackling many urban environments but users develop fatigue and soreness from prolonged use – especially in the hands, wrists, axilla and chest wall. Stryder provides increased efficiency of movement compared to crutches and distribute weight to the legs instead of the hands. Weight bearing on the affected leg is also beneficial as it exercises the leg muscles and prevents muscle fatigue as experienced by long term crutch users. Stryder allows hands-free use and also reduces the risk of injuries associated with weight bearing on the hands and wrists. The disadvantages of current knee scooters are that they are cumbersome and cannot negotiate stairs. Stryder seeks to address such issues by combining the mobility and efficiency of a knee scooter with the versatility and accessibility of a crutch to tackle users’ everyday obstacles.
