| The portable cordless kettle contains a highly efficient heat pump which cycles refrigerant to transfer heat from the ambient air to the tank. The refrigerant passes around a metallic coil tube which is bonded to the outside of the tank to achieve good heat transfer. The user controls the operation via a visually prominent on/off switch which changes colour to indicate the water temperature. The small microprocessor based control unit monitors the water temperature and switches the pump on and off as necessary. The battery unit is Lithium-ion which is compact, light and can be recharged via a socket in the base of the unit. | ||||||||||

Conventional vacuum flasks keep liquid hot for a short period of time; however, as the liquid get colder, they are not able to re-heat it. Today people love traveling and doing more outdoor activities, therefore the demand for a portable device which could provide quick refreshment on the way is highly increasing, as it would be a smart way to save time and money. The initial idea is to employ some kind of technology which could heat up the liquid without the need of electricity to the flask. Having done some research, I found out that the similar technology that I have been thinking of is already there, the heat pump water heater, has been applied for swimming pools or domestic water heaters. It provides highly energy efficient solutions by moving heat from a low temperature heat source to a higher temperature heat sink, to heat up water for household usage. Its principle operates in reverse to refrigerators and air conditioners, which turn the hot air input into cooler air output. (Source: James Dyson Awards) |
