Photosmith is photo app for iPad aimed for both amateur and professional photographers and aimed at helping to organize photos. The app can communicate with Lightroom and make carrying a laptop on the go unnecessary in many situations.

Adobe’s Lightroom has become the number one choice for digital photo management for many photographers in recent year. However until now it required a desktop or notebook computer to use and so far Adobe did not release a tablet version for it (although its not unreasnable that some sort of version will come out in the not too distant future).

the iPad allows users to use Apple’s Camera Connection Kit to download his pictures from the camera to the iPad but it does not offer sorting, categorizing, or anything other than viewing. Here comes the Photosmith app to the rescue to bridge this gap between the camera and computer. Using the app photographers can take their pictures in the field, download them to the iPad, and use Photosmith to review their images, add to custom collections, filter by certain criteria, assign metadata, and filter by that data. Photosmith also fills a critical gap in the photographer’s current mobile workflow- allowing full 1:1 zoom of even 21 megapixel RAW images.

Most importantly, all this data stored on the iPad can now be synchronized with Adobe’s Lightroom. Instead of duplicating efforts or trying to import through iTunes, Photosmith syncs directly to Lightroom on Windows or Mac using the Photosmith Lightroom Plugin. All photos (RAW or JPG) and all metadata is transferred over wirelessly. In addition, photos can be sent to Facebook, Flickr, Dropbox, or email; and when supported, all keywords and captions are sent as well.

Recently TFOT reported on other iPad related apps for photographers  - Adobe multitouch Photoshop SDK for iPad and on a different note earlier this week we covered the First Images of the Upcoming Sony NEX-3C Camera.
