Just over half of cot deaths happen when parents sleep with their child, either in bed or on the sofa, research shows. In many cases, parents had also been using alcohol or drugs. Cot death has become far less common in the UK following the success of the 'back to sleep' campaign, launched in 1991. Many parents now know about the most important ways of preventing cot death: making sure babies sleep on their backs, avoiding smoking around babies, and being careful to avoid overheating.    (source: guardian.co.uk)
