New research contradicts key evidence that Sun-fuelled life arose 2.7 billion years ago. The analysis, led by Birger Rasmussen of Curtin University of Technology in Bentley, Western Australia, shows that hydrocarbons were deposited in the rocks 2.15 billion years ago at most, eliminating the unexplained time-lag.
