New research contradicts key evidence that Sun-fuelled life arose 2.7 billion years ago. A fresh analysis of ancient rocks from the Australian outback has challenged conventional wisdom about when photosynthesis emerged on Earth. The analysis, led by Birger Rasmussen of Curtin University of Technology in Bentley, Western Australia, shows that hydrocarbons were deposited in the rocks 2.15 billion years ago at most, eliminating the unexplained time-lag.    (source: nature.com)
