Europe is losing its snow, and Alpine resorts that depend on winter tourism are very worried. A new study shows that the snow shortage in the Swiss Alps has not come about gradually, but began quite suddenly at the end of the 1980s. This 'regime shift' has robbed many Alpine locations of between 20% and 60% of their 'snow days' — days when the depth of snow exceeds thresholds required for typical winter sports such as snowboarding and cross-country skiing.    (source: nature.com)
