Artigo – VIA’s DIY Micro-PC Wednesday, September 10, 2008 - Nir Grava Home >> Articles >> Product Review

Revealed to the public for the first time at CES 2008 in Las Vegas, VIA’s Artigo ultra small “do it yourself” desktop will immediately catch your eye. Small, relatively simple to install and use, and not too pricy, this unique gizmo has the potential to become a success story. The only real question is – what can it do and why do you need it?

Technical Background
VIA managed to include all the features needed for a PC in a 3.9"x2.8" Pico board, concentrating most functionality in the main low power C7 CPU and the VX700 chip which contains all the I/O functions from sound to video and networking.
Artigo is powered by a VIA C7 1 GHz Processor and an x86 compliant processor created by VIA labs. The main advantage of the C7 is its low power consumption and low heat dissipation requiring almost no cooling for smooth operation. This type of processor is gaining popularity and was recently adopted by HP in its Mini-Note 2133 model. This processor places VIA as a viable player in the low power consumer CPU market alongside Intel and AMD. Overview Chassis

VIA must be commended for their simple one page assembly instructions. This document is sufficient for the complete assembly of the unit and even a person with no prior hardware assembly experience can assemble the unit in less than 20 minutes.
Installing Windows XP Pro on the unit took slightly less than an hour to complete (probably due to the relatively slow 2.5" hard drive used in our case). The standard Windows drivers did not identify three main components, the LAN, video, and sound properly. This was quickly fixed by using the supplied driver CD. Total boot time after a clean installation of Windows XP pro is 32 seconds from power on to full desktop mode which was faster than we expected. System Tests: Phase I: Daily TasksRunning many different types of video including Mpeg, Divx, and Xvid worked smoothly without any lag. Sound was also quite good; we had no problem listening to music with the device. Browsing the internet was a breeze and Office applications such as Microsoft Word 2007 and PowerPoint worked flawlessly even with a number of open documents. Parts of this review were actually written using Artigo and the feeling was similar to that of working with a notebook computer in many respects. Phase II: Gaming
Noise / Temperature / HTPC Usage
We did run into a strange sound issue which we were not able to isolate at a late stage of the review. For some reason we got a somewhat distorted sound from the Artigo (on both speakers and headphones). This did not happen at the first part of our review and we do not know whether to attribute it to a change in our testing environment or equipment, a software or driver issue, or some sort of defect which effected our specific test unit. Researching this issue on the net turned up empty and so we are fairly confident that this is probably an isolated incident. ConclusionArtigo is a power efficient, relatively quiet little unit which could suffice for light office tasks, movies, and music. The unit can be used in a variety of circumstances, from a small living room computer to a miniature workstation for the office, and as an embedded system. It could also be used as a car PC with some modifications or as a robotic “brain”. We are certain that users and potential buyers will think of a host of other possibilities to use the unit potential.
On the downside, gaming isn’t Artigo’s strong side, and unless you want to reminisce on playing solitaire, we suggest you look elsewhere if this is what you are looking for. Although its size might tempt you to try the Artigo as an HTPC it isn’t suited for this task either unless you are willing to settle for DivX and DVD playback. Pros and ConsPros:

The only reason I'd get such an underpowered pc would be to set up a media center. But I'd only do it with optical out to an amplifier. And they did not include one. Poor marketing decision. |

You make it sound like this thing has two processors. Most small systems are not intended as full desktop replacements. The Mac mini and its imitators are, but they are in a different league and price range altogether. Also, an optical drive would most commonly not come in a small system such as this. These are usually used for kiosks or as computer appliances. Finally, 100 megabit ethernet is MUCH more than adequate for "corporate" needs. I don't know what kind of "corporate" needs you're accustom to, but simple file sharing, internet, and printing does not require gigabit ethernet. |

i think the fan noise is understated in this test - i can not stand it; it's not that it's very loud, it is extremely annoying! how hard can it be to temperature-regulate that? deal breaker for me. |

Sweet mercy, This is a computer the size of a toaster pastry, for crying out loud!! It cost less than 300 bucks and it assembled in 15 minutes. Mine works great. I am using it right now with a wireless keyboard/pointer as I relax in my living room, write emails, work in MS Office products, surf the net and monitor my home security cameras. The fan noise is nothing at all compared to my tower workstation and the wattage is almost nothing. I wish I had 3 of this things |

I must agree with john kios. the networking is more than adequite for a corporate infrastructure. i have been using an Artigo device as an advanced linux router and it has performed flawlessly with about 200 network connections. the fan can become an issue as mine started the fan of death sound about 5 months after putting it into service...however it ran for 24 hours a day for a year before the fan finally died. In the article there was an issue that was discussed concerning the sound. Dont worry guys you didnt mess up the drivers or anything. the audio went out on my device as well. sent it in for repair and it worked again. after a bit of research it turned out that the IC supplier had recieved a bad batch of chips that failed shortly after use. All in all i am extremly satisfied by the Artigo 1000 system. |
